President Tinubu Endorses Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat for 2027 Lagos Governorship

Momentum around the 2027 Lagos governorship race shifted sharply on Wednesday as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu publicly signalled support for his long-time ally and current deputy governor of Lagos state, Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, in what observers see as an early move to shape succession in Nigeria’s most politically consequential state.

The endorsement carries weight within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), where Tinubu’s influence over Lagos politics has remained decisive for more than two decades. Party insiders and analysts say the timing suggests an effort to consolidate internal alignment ahead of what is expected to be a competitive and, potentially, fractious primary process.

In a post on Wednesday, Bayo Onanuga, the president’s special adviser on information and strategy, said Tinubu gave the endorsement during a meeting with members of the Lagos Governance Advisory Council (GAC) at the State House, Abuja. “President Tinubu formally endorses the Lagos APC consensus governorship candidate Obafemi Hamzat at a meeting with members of the Lagos Governance Advisory Council, led by Prince Tajudeen Oluyole Olusi and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu,” Onanuga wrote.

Hamzat, an academic-turned-technocrat, has served as deputy governor since 2019 under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. His political trajectory includes previous stints as commissioner for works and infrastructure, as well as science and technology, roles in which he built a reputation for policy coordination and project delivery. Supporters within government circles often describe him as methodical and deeply familiar with the machinery of state.

Tinubu’s backing is likely to recalibrate the internal dynamics of the APC in Lagos. The party has historically relied on consensus-building anchored by Tinubu’s preferences, but recent cycles have shown signs of evolving power blocs, particularly among younger politicians and technocrats seeking greater influence.

For Hamzat, the endorsement offers both an advantage and a test. While it strengthens his standing among party loyalists, it also places him under heightened scrutiny, especially regarding his ability to transition from a supporting role to the state’s chief executive. Political observers note that Lagos voters have, in recent years, shown increasing willingness to challenge established patterns, as seen in the competitive nature of the 2023 elections.

“This is not just about succession; it is about continuity versus recalibration,” said a Lagos-based political analyst. “Tinubu’s endorsement signals continuity, but the electorate may demand more visible differentiation in leadership style and priorities.”

The broader implications extend beyond Lagos. As Nigeria’s commercial hub and a major revenue-generating state, Lagos often serves as a testing ground for governance models, fiscal strategies, and political alliances that ripple across the federation. A Tinubu-backed candidacy is therefore likely to attract national attention, particularly in the context of the president’s own reform agenda.

Stakeholders across business, civil society, and the political class are expected to watch closely how Hamzat articulates his vision, especially on issues such as infrastructure expansion, urban planning, youth employment, and digital governance. His tenure as deputy governor has coincided with major state initiatives, including transportation reforms and technology-driven public services, but critics argue that he has largely operated outside the public spotlight.

Within the APC, the endorsement could trigger a round of negotiations aimed at managing competing interests. Lagos politics has long been shaped by a delicate balance of party leaders, local government actors, and influential networks. Maintaining cohesion will be critical to avoiding internal fractures that could weaken the party’s electoral position.

For now, Hamzat has not issued a formal statement on the endorsement, and aides say consultations are ongoing. The coming months are expected to reveal whether he will adopt a more visible political posture or continue his measured approach while consolidating support behind the scenes.

What remains clear is that the race for Lagos has entered a new phase earlier than anticipated. Tinubu’s intervention has set a direction, but it has not closed the field. As alignments form and ambitions surface, the contest is shaping up as a test of influence, performance, and public appeal in a state where political outcomes often set the tone for the rest of the country.
